Mattress Care
Mattresses, no matter what kind you have (even the 'it will never wear out' kind), will eventually age and wear out.
Some mattresses don't wear out as fast as others, but none the less, they do eventually wear out. In order to get the
most out of your mattress, here are a few hints and handy tips that will help you keep your mattress for a longer
period of time.
1. When you are changing your sheets, go over your mattress with a quick vacuum. This helps remove any dust, lint, dry skin,
dust mites and hair from your mattress (which can also contain natural body oils that eventually wear down the mattress
material).
2. Once a month, rotate your mattress. Once every 3 months flip your mattress (unless you have a pillow top that
cannot be flipped). This helps to keep the wear on your mattress more even, and therefore will hold its original
shape for longer periods of time.
3. When you change your sheets, quickly spray (and let completely dry) your mattress with a disinfectant
spray (like Lysol). This will help cut down on the amount of germs that can seep into your mattress
(which is part of the reason you sometimes go to bed feeling fine, and wake up feeling like you're getting a cold).
4. If someone is not well, make sure you change the sheets they're sleeping on at least once every other day.
When people break fevers, they often sweat. Sweat contains a high amount of body oils, that can seep into your
mattress and cause it to wear out faster.
5. If you're going away on a trip that will last for more than 1 week, make sure that you have clean sheets on the
bed before you leave. This will keep the dust and mites to a minimum.
6. If you have pets that regularly sleep on the bed with you, be sure to change your sheets at least once a week.
Pets have a higher content of body oil than humans do, and shed a lot more than humans do (even short haired pets
can shed just as much, if not more, than long haired pets). Also remember, for cat owners... Cats have FUR, not hair.
Dogs have hair, not fur. Fur contains 50% more natural oils than hair.
